Mission & Vision

Women Laughing on Beach

Mission Statement

The Women's Health Collaboratory (WHC) is committed to advancing and scaling evidence-based, low-cost, healthy lifestyle behaviors that promote well-being and longevity. We meet women “where they are” testing and implementing ways to improve health and have a major focus on implementing our remotely delivered prolonged nightly fasting (PNF) intervention. By prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, we aim to improve the health and quality of life for women from diverse cultures, locations, and heritage, empowering them with sustainable strategies to support long-term vitality and resilience.

Vision Statement

The WHC envisions a future where all women navigating their adult lifespan, particularly the menopausal transition, have access to effective strategies that enhance their sleep, cognition, cardiometabolic health, and overall quality of life.

Her 2017 article reviewing health benefits of nightly fasting is cited 968 times worldwide. She is an internationally recognized expert in PNF research, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer risk. Funding sources and publications reflect the breadth of her expertise and ability to lead productive, impactful transdisciplinary teams.

Dara L. James, PhD, MS
Associate Director

Dara L. James, PhD, MS, is Senior Clinical Research Program Manager in the Emergency Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Director or the WHC. She has been consistently funded as Principal Investigator of PNF clinical trials since 2019, recently completing the first-ever nationwide remotely-delivered PNF intervention with Dr. Sears. Dr. James is a women’s health expert, publishing numerous research articles related to menopause, behaviors, cognition, sleep, and quality of life. She is the first to formally conduct PNF intervention qualitative exit interviews with participants, which have informed protocol optimization and revealed unrecognized benefits. She leads intervention fidelity assurance, outcome surveys, staff training, and qualitative analyses.

Julie Pendergast, PhD
Associate Director

Julie Pendergast, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Kentucky and Associate Director of the WHC. Her team and Dr. Sears developed the SMS texting app used to monitor and support intervention adherence in our PNF trials. This app is key for future integration of self-relevance features. She is an expert in metabolic health, sleep, circadian biology, and PNF trials in postmenopausal women with obesity and/or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). She is the ongoing Principal Investigator of one of the first NIH-funded, fully-powered PNF studies (NIDDK; Sears, Co-Investigator) and secured pilot funds to explore PNF feasibility in postmenopausal women with MCI (Sears & James, Consultants).

Impact

Impact Statement

Women spend more than half of their lives in one of three menopausal transition stages, perimenopause, menopause, postmenopause. Despite being the fastest-growing U.S. demographic, women of menopausal age remain underrepresented in research. Less than 1% of research in the biology of aging considers menopause. Effective resources and strategies for women in the menopausal transition are sparse, including drug-free, lifestyle behavior change options. The Women’s Health Collaboratory (WHC) bridges these critical gaps by developing and delivering low-cost, accessible programs to reduce cancer risk and improve cardiometabolic health, mental well-being, sleep, and quality of life.

With more than 13 years of research collaboration, we prioritize being inclusive, particularly among Black, Hispanic, and Native American women. The WHC is a group of scientific leaders in conducting clinical trials demonstrating health benefits of prolonged nightly fasting (PNF). In continuing to expand our reach, we aim to deliver lasting health benefits through sustainable behavior change, advancing women's health, longevity, and quality of life.
